MASTERS EDITION - KAROL WEISSLECHNER

In the Masters of BADW Edition we present a distinctive personality of the Slovak art scene, whose work naturally spans the fields of architecture, design and especially original jewellery. In his work, the different spheres intertwine, interpenetrate, irritate and enrich each other. His "catalogue raisonné" to date contains a huge range of diverse, formally and substantively conceived works. They are linked by their specific narrative, theatricality, surreal humour and poetics. A kind of never-ending scenography of small and big stories, which stand at one time as an object, jewellery or interior, at another time as an installation, exhibition architecture, theatre set.

In the Masters for BADW edition, we focus on a small selection of works from the mid-1980s and 1990s, with an emphasis on furniture solitaires, home accessories and lighting fixtures that confidently and pioneeringly carried a distinct postmodern aesthetic. Into the dictated uniformity of totalitarian society and the then already exhausted modernism, they opened the door to a freer perception of concepts at the same time as perestroika furniture, object, space. Together with Dušan Voštenák and Imre Vašek (also graduates of architecture under Prof. V. Vilhan at VŠVU), they created a radical and subversive postmodern language that boldly disrupted the canons of interior architecture and design.

Prof. Karol Weisslechner graduated from the Department of Architectural Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava under Vojtech Vilhan (1980 - 1988). After university he worked at the Department of Architecture, in the Architrave Studio (1990 - 1995). In 1995 he took over the jewellery studio from Anton Cepek (later under the name of Atelier S + M + L_XL - KOV A ŠPERK), which he led until 2023. The name reflects the extension of the teaching according to the concept of Karol Weisslechner, which includes, in addition to the creation of original jewellery (S), tableware and smaller interior objects (M), the design of artefacts for the interior (L) to large-scale exterior objects (XL). From 2007 to 2012 he was the rector of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.
